The president of the Slovenian Association of Fine Artists (ZDSLU), Zoran Poznič, remarked that women in visual arts have often been hidden from view, and only now are talented female artists beginning to find their rightful place in art history.
The primary goal of this evening’s March Yin exhibition is to highlight and support female artists, stated the event organizers, a business group from Murska Sobota operating under the name Business Point. For this exhibition, they invited 17 female artists to participate.
The featured artists include Rosina Curhalek, Vesna Davidovič, Aleksandra Fekonja, Špela Fridau, Irena Gayatri Horvat, Cvetka Hojnik, Metka Kavčič, Klaudia Kolarič, Leya Marinčič, Slađana Matić Trstenjak, Tatjana Mijatović, Marija Pavlič, Vika Potočnik, Jerneja Smolnikar, Jerca Šantej, Špela Šedivy, and Slavica Štrukelj-Kokoravec.
Vika Potočnik, a politician and humanitarian participating as a sculptor in this exhibition, noted before the event that this occasion is not only a showcase of women's artistic perspectives and creations but also an example of collaboration between business and the arts.
Poznič, who will deliver the opening address, emphasized that women have been overlooked in visual arts for half a millennium. Only in the past 30 years have we begun to recognize and uncover their true contributions.
“Countless girls, wives, and highly talented and successful female artists are only now finding their place in art history. Slovenia is no exception to this. We all know Ivana Kobilca and maybe one or two other names. Yet, today, we can finally speak of a genuine wave of female visual artists creating and living among us. Some represent the very pinnacle of 21st-century visual art. Moreover, some of them are participating in this exhibition,” he stated.
He added that "we are entering a time frame" where women are increasingly taking on the responsibility of holding a mirror to society.
